What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a type of whole dental care that includes the use of both non-invasive and invasive procedures to improve the appearance of the teeth. The techniques used to achieve this are prosthetic and/or surgical. Cosmetic dentistry can be used to straighten teeth, close gaps, brighten teeth, repair cracks and/or chips and more. Physical appearance is the most obvious benefit to cosmetic dentistry, but physical, emotional and mental health are also improved thanks to cosmetic dentistry. Following are some of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures along with some details of how each is performed.

Some Common Dentistry Procedures

  • Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening makes a huge difference in the quality of your smile. The dentist’s teeth whitening techniques are far superior to any other method. Choose from laser teeth whitening, two-session whitening with laser-activated bleaching substance or take home kit with personal mouth guard. Remember that home teeth whitening kits may irreversibly damage the enamel on your teeth.
  • Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin pieces of porcelain that are adhered to the front surface of the tooth. Porcelain material is very similar to teeth in substance and color. Additionally, there are several shades of porcelain you can choose from. Porcelain veneers act like a shield, hiding teeth imperfections and protecting the underlying tooth from bacteria.
  • Dental Implants: Dental implants are use to replace one or more missing teeth. First, a tooth root made of titanium is surgically implanted into the bone socket where the missing tooth was. over time, the gums hold the titanium root in place. The dental implant tis then attached to the titanium root. The result is a permanent, natural-looking and long-lasting tooth.
  • Cosmetic Bonding: Cosmetic bonding is traditionally used to fill in spaces in between teeth. Before the actual procedure, the tooth must be prepared. The dentist widens the surface of the tooth and smoothes it using special tools. This step takes care of any existing fissures, cracks and unusual spaces in between teeth. Next, a malleable dental resin that matches the natural color of the teeth is applied to the tooth.  It’s hardened into place with UV rays. Finally, the dentist trims the hardened plastic and polishes it so it blends in naturally with the rest of the teeth.
  • Dental Crowns and Bridges: Dental crowns and bridges are often used in restorative dentistry but they are also effective in cosmetic dentistry. In particular, dental crowns and bridges can be used to cover an unsightly filling or to restore one or more broken teeth. The materials used to make crowns are resin, metal, porcelain and ceramic. These are all chosen for their durability, which enables the crown to strengthen weakened teeth.
